Jim attended Powell Avenue School, and as an adult pursued his career as a science teacher in Port Washington High School. Jim became known as "The Birdman of Bethpage" because of his studies of the Great Horned Owls and Red-tailed Hawks that call the Bethpage State Park home. In the February 2005 issue of the Conservationist magazine, a very special year at Bethpage was chronicled by Jim, and the article was called "The True Champions of Bethpage State Park".
