Hickey, Brian

A volunteer firefighter in Bethpage, where he grew up, married his high school sweetheart and had four children: Danny, 23; Dennis, 18; Jaclyn, 16; and Kevin, 10. He became a New York City firefighter about 1980(?) and commanded Rescue Company 4, which rushes to every major fire in Queens, not to fight flames, but to save trapped civilians and firefighters. He was killed in the WTC terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

Grumman Road East is now named Hickey Blvd.

On November 11, 2003, the Bethpage Post Office was named to honor Brian Hickey by an act of Congress, Public Law 108-117.

Brian was a 28 year member of the Bethpage Fire Department, he served as Fire Commissioner of the Bethpage Fire District and a Second Deputy Chief Instructer at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. A ladder truck is dedicated in his memory.

The Bethpage Fire Department also dedicated a beautiful marble monument in his memory. The monument is located on the lawn in front of Headquarters and will have two benches on either side made with steel from the World Trade Center site.

Brian is responsible for all senior housing to have sprinkler systems installed.
