Joseph and Caroline were very active in the Bethpage Schools. Joseph was on the school board for about eighteen years and was instrumental in starting the first cafeteria in the Powell Avenue School. They were very active in St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Joseph organized the Holy Name Society and Caroline organized the Altar Guild.

The area they lived, on Central Blvd., was pretty much a farming community and the farmland was owned by the Walsh family which was located where Bradford Lane is today. Today (2006) the Ellinger home on Central Boulevard has been torn down and replace with two very large homes. (Submitted by Emily Ellinger Sutton - December 10, 2005)
