Groceries, Hardware, Paints and Oils, Broadway (CENTRAL PARK NEWS 10/3/29)

Grocery store on Broadway

Harry V. and Kathryn Walton came to Central Park around 1920 and purchased or leased the Sengstacken building south of the railroad tracks on east Broadway where they also lived. He operated a general store and in 1922 Gloria was born there.

He then built the adjacent building in 1924, with a grocery and hardware store with residence above. Harry Jr. was born the same year, and in 1926 James was born.

The children attended Powell Avenue School and in 1934 sister, Lois was born.

Rememberances of the Sengstacken building being utilized as a silent movie theatre with a piano for a short time then it was a miniature golf course.

The bad times caught up with Harry's business which he lost in 1936. (information provided by Jim Walton - March 21, 2006)
