Born on August 27, 1918 in North Central Park, known as Swede Town, to Robert and Alma Knapp. Brother to Annalisa (Betty), Impi Maria (Peggy), and Helen. John attended Powell Avenue School and went on to graduate from Farmingdale High School. He joined the Army and served his country during WWII. John was missing in action, March 2, 1945, he had been in a POW camp in Germany. He had been wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. When he returned home he went to work for Grumman Aircraft and he made his home in Plainview.
