Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) is one of the nation’s leading telecommunications and entertainment companies. Its portfolio of operations ranges from robust cable television packages, high-speed Internet access and local telephone service to championship professional sports teams and national television program networks. Founded in 1973 as a cable television operator serving 1,500 households in New York’s Long Island suburbs, Cablevision’s cable television operations now serve more than 3.4 million customers in the Boston, Cleveland and the New York Metropolitan areas. Cablevision’s New York Metropolitan area cable cluster, with a customer base of 2.7 million, is the largest such concentration in the nation. (Cablevision on the Web)

Cablevision has come a long way since 1973 with its original 1500 L. I. cable subscribers. With the focus on entertainment, and the many ways to enhance and make the latest technology available to all has been a goal of Cablevision. Their telecommunications operation is of the state of the art equipment. Including: Optimum TV, Optimum Telephone, Optimum Online, Lightpath which provides high tech industries telecommunication serving hospitals, financial institutions, and universities. The WIZ showcase for its family of brands, and a valuable connection between electronic equipment and the use of Cablevision services.
As a Historical Society, we were pleased to learn about the refurbishing of Radio City Music Hall to its grand and beautiful wonder which is etched in the memories of many.
Madison Square Garden, one of the worlds most famous arenas, which houses the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers is another dimension of Cablevision. The desire to bring good entertainment for all ages and interest is evident by the varied programming. Rainbow Media holdings provide programming such as: The Romance Classics, The American Movie Classics, and Bravo. The Metro Guide, Metro Traffic & Weather showcase the metro and surrounding area. Cablevision is proud of its partnership with Channel 13, their 24 hour News (News 12), and the ability to access the many public service announcements. We are looking forward to viewing the first Long Island minor league baseball team, The Long Island Ducks, this summer. All makes Cablevision a very well rounded form of entertainment.
Cablevision doesn't stop with their desire to entertain. They have a big investment in the youth of Long Island by providing free cable to schools K-12, scholarships, working with teachers, providing internet access to schools and libraries, also, hands on teacher and student workshops. The Long Island Challenge, and academic quiz, where schools around Long Island challenge each other in the areas of math, science, history, literature and Long Island History. An opportunity to win prizes for the school and student. Cablevision, due to its headquarters location, has an interest in the Bethpage Schools. A powerful investment in the future!
