The State Transportation Department planned the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (Rt. #135) from Seaford on the south shore to Oyster Bay on the north shore.  With construction starting in the early 1960s and was completed, from Seaford (Merrick Road) to Syosset (Jericho Turnpike) by the end of the decade.  The expressway comes through Bethpage with exits and entrances on Powell Avenue and Cherry Avenue.  Construction was stopped for future plans were in place for a bridge to Connecticut or upstate New York.  Robert Moses had supported this bridge for many years, as well as, other agencies, and Governor Nelson Rockefeller were in favor of a bridge to provide ways of getting off the island and to ensure the island's continued economic development.  Unfortunately, due to opposition by local residents on both shores, on Long Island and Westchester County caused the proposed bridge to be dropped in the early 1970's.
